Alpamayo Restaurant Reviews

Spent the night in Lenox for a wedding, and got news from my sister-in-law that she saw a Peruvian restaurant in Lee. So here's my disclosure, I was born and raised in Peru for half my life so I will try not to be bias. I met Javier the owner, very pleasant man who is "authentic" as he was born in Huaraz. The restaurant lacks decor, but it has only been open for a month so I'm looking forward to coming back once he adds some of Peru's culture. The food was surprisingly good, and he was attentive to some of my special requests that I did not see on the menu. We ordered the Paella de Mariscos: spanish seasoned rice and vegetables with mussels, clams, calamari and shrimp. It was not overly spicy at all, but if thats what you like ( just ask him to add peruvian rocoto)that goes for any dish. We asked for a side of Yuca, which essentially is a woody shrub that is deep fried much like a french fry.Looks like fries on steroids but are delicious. I personally like to dip them into the sauce that comes with the Papa a la hauncaina. Oh and by the way, the sauce was on the money. My American/Italian wife liked this the best along with the canchita ( like homemade corn nuts) that are served prior to lunch or dinner. They are salty, but good and go great with beer. I then special ordered Choros a La Chalaca. These are cooked mussels, that are then covered in the perfect peruvian "salsa" made with finely minced onions, diced tomatoes, diced cilantro, aji amarillo (yellow peppers), and lime. Dont forget to ask for warm sweet potato on the side to dip into the juice that is left over. This is not like sushi, and the mussels do not have that "fishy" taste to them. This was my favorite ! I finished off with some peruvian ice cream flavored with a peruvian fruit called chirimoya. I cant wait to try the lucuma or Mango next time. The couple across from us had the ceviche mixto which they claimed was delicious ( I will try it next time). My next visit will be with a much larger group where I will get a chance to order many more dishes. I will follow up, and inform you how that visit goes. So do I recommend Alpamayo ? Absolutely

While visiting Lee, Massachusetts we were intrigued by having Peruvian food for the first time. What a delight Alpamayo was. The food was delicious, reasonable, and the service most gracious.

I am not familiar with Peruvian cuisine and don't have a base for comparison but the food was unique and delicious. i can't wait to go back! Wait staff is very young and not very confident but they're nice and they seem to be putting in good effort.
